How the quality of governance helps protect our Ocean

New study launched Research

At the Blue Justice Conference 2023, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the German Institute for Development and Sustainability (IDOS) launched a new study on Connections that matter: How the quality of governance institutions can help protect our Ocean. One of WoMen+Sea’s principal consultants, Julia Kercher, worked closely with UNDP to conceptualize and coordinate the study.

It finds, for example, strong evidence that meaningful and inclusive engagement of non-state stakeholder yields not only additional knowledge to design policies but also fosters trust, ownership and cooperation. This increases the acceptance and legitimacy of marine protection efforts and reduces conflict, resistance and illicit activity, thereby making them more effective.

Towards a Just Transition in the Maritime

WoMen+Sea honoured to support the Maritime Just Transition Task Force Global Engagement

WoMen+Sea has accepted an invitation by the UN Global Compact to be a member of the Maritime Just Transition Task Force’s Global Industry Peer Learning Group. The Task Force was established at COP26 and is the first global sectoral task force dedicated to a ‘Just Transition’. It seeks to coordinate collaboration between governments, business, workers and academia towards a shipping industry that is safe, equitable and human-centred.

The Task Force includes the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The first meetings of the peer learning group have been very insightful already!

Systemic governance issues perpetuating fisheries crime

UNDP’s Blue Action Dialogue toolbox to combat fisheries crime.

WoMen+Sea was commissioned by UNDP to develop the Blue Action Dialogues manual and toolbox which helps policy-makers convene different government agencies and with key stakeholders from business and civil society to address organised crime in the fisheries sector. The toolbox draws on systems thinking and design thinking to map, prioritize and act on systemic governance issues perpetuating fisheries crime.

The guidance will be available through UNDP’s Blue Resilience Project, part of the Norway-led Blue Justice Initiative, which supports countries that are signatories to the Copenhagen Declaration on Organised Crime in the Global Fishing Industry.
